Support Sherman's Shoe Drive!

We Want Your Shoes! Sherman the Tortoise at Micke Grove Zoo is hosting a shoe drive, collecting new and slightly used shoes from kids sizes up to men’s size 13! In addition, Sherman is also looking for the following new, unopened and unused items: socks, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, feminine hygiene products, soap, shampoo and conditioner.

The drive started on September 5, which is the International Day of Charity and will end on October 31. Once the drive is over, Sherman, a Radiated Tortoise, and his fellow Radiated Tortoises, Bertha, Quasi, and Cleo, will inspect the shoes to make sure they receive the official tortoise seal of approval. All items collected during the drive will be donated to the American Indian Child Resource Center in Oakland, California by November 15 on World Kindness Day.

Micke Grove Zoo has selected the American Indian Child Resource Center as this year’s recipient because of the organization’s deep commitment to cultural preservation, education and community support. The zoo recognizes the longstanding connections Native communities hold with the natural world and values the Center’s dedication to fostering respect for both people and the environment. By contributing to an organization that shares the zoo’s mission of stewardship and care, Micke Grove Zoo is honored to give back to the broader community. This partnership also highlights the unique story of Sherman, the zoo’s tortoise, whose playful personality continues to inspire conservation awareness. This initiative not only provides the zoo with an opportunity to give back to the community but also serves to raise awareness of the Radiated Tortoise, a Critically Endangered species.

Donations can be dropped off at the zoo’s ticket booth during operating hours, Wednesdays - Sundays, 10AM-5PM. For more information call (209) 331-2050.
